 Protecting Kids From the Sun!
With the right precautions, kids can safely play in the sun. Here are the most effective strategies:
First, avoid being in the sun for prolonged times when it's highest overhead and therefore the strongest (normally from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM in the northern hemisphere). If kids are in the sun between these hours, be sure to apply protective sunscreen — even if they're just playing in the backyard. Most sun damage occurs as a result of incidental exposure during day-to-day activities, not at the beach.
Even on cloudy, cool, or overcast days, UV rays travel through the clouds and reflect off sand, water, and even concrete. Clouds and pollution don't filter out UV rays, and they can give a false sense of protection. This "invisible sun" can cause unexpected sunburn and skin damage. Often, kids are unaware that they're developing a sunburn on cooler or windy days because the temperature or breeze keeps skin feeling cool on the surface. Water Safety Tips!
- Learn to swim. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim. Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone. The American Red Cross has swimming courses for people of any age and swimming ability. To enroll in a swim course, contact your local Red Cross chapter
-
Children or inexperienced swimmers should take precautions, such as wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (PFD) when around the water.
-
Watch out for the dangerous “too’s” – too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much strenuous activity.

From the Principal
Welcome to the Latta Early Childhood Center web site. We are excited about beginning a new school year. Our plan is to meet student needs through carefully planned classroom and daily small group instruction. We look forward to a successful and productive year. We encourage all parents to become involved in your child’s education. Parents can go online at any time and check your child’s homework assignments and calendar of events for the week. We also ask that parents attend PTO meetings, parent conferences, and other special events at school. Your child will have a planner to write down daily assignments. Please look at this every afternoon and discuss the day’s events with your child. We encourage you to contact us at any time if you have questions or concerns. If you would like to talk to your child’s teacher, please notify the office and we will be happy to set up a conference. The teachers are available to talk to parents from 2:15 to 3:15. We look forward to a great school year filled with many success stories and accomplishments. Thank you for your continued support. Dollie R Morrell
