 Reading to Children at Home
Here at the Latta Early Childhood Center we believe that family reading time is important and one of the best ways to help prepare your child for school. Children learn about the value and importance of reading as they watch their family reading and writing in everyday life. Whether reading a novel, sharing a story, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card or reading a street sign, children observe the value of reading and writing.
What you can do at home
- Be yourself and involve your child in everyday conversations from an early age.
- Read aloud to your child. It will help your child to learn the language of books and encourages the enjoyment of books and reading.
- Talk about books together - make reading a shared, enjoyable activity.
- See that there is a range of reading material for your child at home, both fiction and non-fiction.
- Read to your child in your first language - research shows that using your first language will help your child when he or she learns to read English.
- Try not to let television intrude on reading time - set aside some uninterrupted time to read with your child.
- Listen to your child read every day, even if only for a short time.
- Give books as treats and presents.
- Discuss the meanings of stories and words.
- Join your local library. Borrow books for yourself as well as your child.

Parent Reminders
 Late Arrivals
When students are dropped after 7:45, they are considered tardy. All children entering the building after 7:45 will need to be signed in by a parent. Thanks for your help with this matter.

From the Principal
Welcome to the Latta Early Childhood Center web site. We are excited about beginning a new school year. Our plan is to meet student needs through carefully planned classroom and daily small group instruction. We look forward to a successful and productive year. We encourage all parents to become involved in your child’s education. Parents can go online at any time and check your child’s homework assignments and calendar of events for the week. We also ask that parents attend PTO meetings, parent conferences, and other special events at school. Your child will have a planner to write down daily assignments. Please look at this every afternoon and discuss the day’s events with your child. We encourage you to contact us at any time if you have questions or concerns. If you would like to talk to your child’s teacher, please notify the office and we will be happy to set up a conference. The teachers are available to talk to parents from 2:15 to 3:15. We look forward to a great school year filled with many success stories and accomplishments. Thank you for your continued support. Dollie R Morrell
